Welcome to my photography website! My name is Derek Trapp and I am a passionate photographer based in Calgary.  I love nature and architecture and I specialize in landscapes and cityscapes. I believe that photography is an art form that enables us to capture and preserve fleeting moments and memories. Through my lens, I aim to tell stories, evoke emotions, and capture the beauty of the world around us. Each photograph has its own unique story to tell.

Photography has been my hobby for close to 50 years. I have travelled to many places in the world including Italy, France, England, Alaska, Turkey, Croatia, Spain, Greece, United States, Galapagos, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Peru and of course Canada.  My camera gear accompanied me wherever I went, allowing me to take tens of thousands of pictures. Many of these pictures were great and provided life long memories, however, they were not pieces of art. In late 2021, I retired from a 32 year career, and I now had the time to pursue my passion and develop my photography skills.  I wanted to create stunning photos worthy to be hung on a wall.  I spent the time, invested in my learning and practiced in the field. It was through this investment that I came to understand the use of light, compositions, exposures and camera settings to create memorable photos.

 

In creating stunning images, it was more than just going to the location, pointing and clicking.   It was about planning, understanding where to be to create the right composition and using the right camera settings.  Most of the work on this website is based in Western Canada where I have been honing my skills since 2021.  I have ventured out early in the morning or late in the evening to capture the light at sunrise or sunset. I have had the pleasure to meet other great photographers and I have appreciated the learnings that they have bestowed upon me.
